About

I’m an evidence-based colour consultant, designer, content creator, researcher and writer. My consultancy work involves evidence-based colour strategies for applied design and the built environment, environmental visual literacy and environment-behaviour research and insight.

A trained designer, I’m one of a handful of people with a PhD that investigated the interface between colour and human response within the context of planning policy and the built environment.

I established my consultancy in 2006 and have since worked on a large range of projects that include evidence-based colour insight and strategies for applied design and the built environment, environmental visual literacy, colour in logo design and branding, and environment- behaviour research and insight.

My clients are diverse and include Aevum Limited, Art Gallery of NSW, Arts Health Institute, Arvida Group (NZ), Auckland District Health Board, Auckland City Hospital, Bonds Coates Patons, Bupa (NZ), Dept. of Public Works, Hexham Textiles, ING Communities, Juvenile Justice NSW, Klein Architects (Auckland), Lifemark Design NZ, Macquarie University, Museum of Contemporary Art, National Textiles, New Zealand Health Design Council, North Sydney Council, Porter Novelli, Powerhouse Museum, Resene Paints, SBS Television, Sydney Design School, Speedo Swimwear, University of Sydney, University of NSW and numerous private clients.

As a writer, I have published more than 30 peer-reviewed academic and trade articles and I’ve delivered numerous peer-reviewed conference papers, seminars and public talks. You can check out the full list at my Academia.edu profile (currently listed in the top 2-3%) and my Amazon.com author page.

Due to my colour/design experience and depth of knowledge, I have been asked to develop and deliver seven TEQSA-compliant tertiary education courses on colour theory and application, graphic design, visual communications design plus art/design history and theory.  I have lectured at the University of Sydney (Faculty of Architecture, Design & Planning), University of NSW (Art + Design formerly COFA) and the Sydney Design School.

In my free time, I cultivate my love affair with coffee, dabble in photography (see Instagram and Pinterest) and create colour palettes (check out @cinema.palettes and @design.palettes on Instagram).

In addition, I’m a Foundation Member of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and a long-term CAC member of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.
